The Greatest Show on the Plateau is Back

It’s official, it’s on, and it will be great; the Plateau’s premier rural display, Dorrigo Show, has been confirmed for November 26 and 27.

After being forced, reluctantly, to cancel last year’s show because of Covid-19, the 2021 exhibition has been re-organised to run over Friday and Saturday. Sunday has been set aside for dismantling the pavilion and a general clean-up.

The show program will include some different scheduling, new sections and the aim of providing increased action for exhibiters and patrons in a Covid safe manner. Members are now encouraged to pay their membership for 2021 which includes unlimited entry into the 109th Dorrigo Show.
Show Society President, Sally Duckett, said after the disappointment of 2020 committee members and volunteers are strongly motivated to renewing the show spirit on the plateau and making 2021 a year to remember.

“This year, horse sections will start on Friday at 8am and continue on Saturday, utilising three rings and the cutting arena,” Sally said.

“Events will include the Dorrigo Show Horse Challenge, which involves numerous horse-related skills including whip cracking, a water jump, negotiating obstacles, and gates.

“The event tests the understanding between horse and rider and it is expected a number of the participating horses will be brumbies, reclaimed from Guy Fawkes National Park and trained for a variety of roles.

“Midday Friday will be the start of the beef cattle section with junior and school classes and on Friday night we will host the extremely popular Dorrigo Rodeo, starting at 7 p.m.

“An hour before the rodeo we’ll welcome a new event: The Back Track Boys, from Armidale with the very popular dog high jumping, some of the best reaching heights of almost three metres, an evening meal will also be available from the Catering Committee.

“Saturday will be jam-packed with all our favourite entertainment: traders’ lane, sideshow alley, dairy cattle and poultry judging, a full woodchop program, bush dog trials and the grand parade.

“We have included a new event on Saturday - Off The Track Ridden Thoroughbred. Showjumping will also run Friday and Saturday.

“Our new showground lighting will give added appeal to the very popular motor bike time trial, fireworks and ute challenge.

“In the pavilion, there will be some changes in when entry forms and exhibits need to be submitted. This will streamline our set-up processes and allow the pavilion to be open for public viewing as early as possible on Friday.

“Please check the Show Schedule, when it is released, for these changes.” The 2021 Show will include the theme “ Women in Agriculture “.

Women play an important role in all aspects of Agriculture, all sections of the Show will have a special class especially for women. Updates will be featured on our new look website.

During the past 18 months the society has sponsored a number of “one off” events to maintain interest in rural activities and competition.

The most recent involved a livestock and working dog clinic under the instruction of Scott Amon from Barru Working Kelpies.

The Barru dogs are the result of 70 years of careful breeding and feature a quiet, low stress approach to moving stock with trained dogs.

This step-by-step program, last week-end, demonstrated how to educate livestock and dogs at the same time. All participants appreciated the 2 day event which featured a camp oven dinner on Saturday night.

Cattle and sheep were utilised for this event.
